Typing Practice for Programmers: Brackets, Indentation and Symbols
Separate symbols from editor behavior in code transcripts and practice well-structured code snippets.
code input is not equal to ordinary English input
Capitalization, parentheses, and punctuation often have clear roles in code, and being quick with random vocabulary does not mean you are proficient in symbolic linking. When practicing, first select small fragments that you can understand, know where each character is, and then check for brackets or semicolons that are easily missed.
Keyboard practice cannot replace programming understanding. Being able to quickly copy a program does not mean that you can design, debug or interpret it. Therefore, the goal of this exercise is limited to input actions and character verification.
First distinguish the automatic behavior of the editor
Actual editors may automatically complete brackets, indents, or quotation marks, and plain text exercises may not necessarily have these behaviors. When copying the speed comparison on both sides, the differences need to be explained. If you encounter an extra right bracket, first check to see if you and the editor have filled it in.
Tab in a web page may also move focus, so don't assume that all training pages support editor-style indentation. First verify the operations allowed in the current input area, and practice multi-line formatting in the local editor if necessary.
Use structural inspection to replace blind scanning
When practicing an expression, check whether the brackets are paired; when practicing variable names, check the case and underline; when practicing a string, check whether the quotation marks are consistent with the target. Then put these fragments into complete sentences or lines of code and watch for errors in the connections.
Today’s practice
Use a self-written example without sensitive information, such as total = price * count;, and add a pair of brackets and a string. Only add one structure at a time and check slowly. Finally, use a new snippet to test. Don’t mistake memorization of a certain line of code for general symbol input ability.
