How to Learn Typing: Your First Practice Session

From selecting the input method, finding the cursor to completing the first paragraph of text, establish an introductory typing process that novices can perform.

Complete one short typing task

When you open typing practice for the first time, you don’t need to measure your speed immediately. First confirm whether you want to practice English keystrokes or Chinese input: English letters are input directly, while Chinese usually requires coding, word selection and confirmation. Separating these two tasks reveals where the pause comes from. Touch typing refers to typing without looking at the keyboard. It does not mean that you have to close your eyes or cover your hands at the beginning.

Select the practice language on the TigerTyping homepage, click Start after reading the questions, and focus on the cursor position in the text. Enter a few characters first and make sure the screen responds before continuing. If the letters do not appear, first click on the practice text area to check the focus. Do not press Start continuously or switch windows continuously.

The first lesson only solves three problems

The first problem is to find the starting point: touch F and J on the common QWERTY keyboard and observe whether you can find them stably after putting your hands down. The second problem is to type the target characters one at a time and avoid searching all over the keyboard with your fingers. The third problem is to understand the error message and slow down to confirm the position after discovering the typo instead of typing the entire line in one go and then reworking it.

Chinese novices can first write a familiar sentence and observe the difference between the text in the candidate box and the final text on the screen. The unconfirmed pinyin is not a Chinese character that has been misspelled. Only after completing the word selection, check whether the result is consistent with the practice text.

How to judge whether this lesson is completed

If you can start, enter, correct errors and understand the results independently, you have completed the first step. Record the two keys or two input operations that you are least familiar with today, and review them first next time. The number in the first test is only used as a starting point and is not used to judge whether you have learning talent.

Today’s practice

Give yourself about five minutes: first find the home-row reference keys, then slowly type three lines of short content, and finally review an error. At the end of each row, remove your hand and put it back again to see if you can find the starting point again. If there are still too many tasks, you can just practice positioning and spacing; then add new characters after mastering them.
