Keyboard Basics: The Keys a Beginner Needs First
Recognize the letter area, number row, space, backspace and modifier keys, and use a small task to become familiar with the keyboard.
First understand the keyboard by task
Beginners don’t need to remember all the function keys at once. First find the letter area, number line and space, and then learn the keys commonly used to modify text. Linking the key name to a practical task, such as "enter a name", "separate two words", "change the last word", is easier to perform than memorizing the English name alone.
Observe whether your keyboard has an independent number area, Enter and where are the backspaces. Different device sizes will change the location of some keys, and the tutorial pictures cannot replace the device in front of you. Confirm the location first, do not blindly touch according to the distance in the picture.
Practice basic operations in one sentence
Enter tiger 2026 in your local text editor, delete the last digit and change it to 7. Then start a new line and enter another sentence. This way you can experience text, spaces, numbers, deletion and line breaks at the same time. Enter in the browser form may submit the form, so do this exercise in a normal editor first.
The modifier key must match the target key
Shift, Ctrl or Command are often used in combination with other keys. Learn the combination you really need first, such as selecting a piece of text and copying it, instead of memorizing dozens of shortcut keys a day. Apps can change the behavior of shortcut keys. If you encounter inconsistencies, check the current app instructions first.
Self-examination and next steps
Close the example and try to complete the same task independently. If you always forget the location of a key, give it a minute of positioning practice; if you can find the key but don't know the result, go back to the editor to verify the operation. Add punctuation after completion to avoid turning keyboard learning into terminology memorization at first.
