QWERTY, AZERTY and QWERTZ: Choosing the Right Keyboard Layout

distinguishes the physical keyboard, system input method and practice layout, and solves the problem of inconsistency between keys and screen characters.

Three settings should be distinguished

What is printed on the physical keycaps, what the operating system interprets the keys as, and what is displayed on the practice page are three different levels. Switching languages on a web page usually does not install the system input method for you; the keyboard map on the web page is not equal to the current layout of the system. Confirm these three first, and then judge whether you have "remembered the wrong key".

For example, if you see a certain letter in the question and press the corresponding position of the key cap but another character is output, it may be that the system has selected a different layout. If the result is an accented character or symbol change, you should also check the layout and modifier key status first instead of rushing to replace the hardware.

Use the shortest text to troubleshoot

Open a normal text editor, enter a short paragraph of letters, numbers and punctuation, and then enter the same content on the practice page. If both sides are not as expected, check the system input method first. If only the web page is abnormal, record the browser, layout name and specific characters, so that you can further investigate.

The system description of Apple provides a method to view the current input method virtual keyboard, which is suitable for checking the actual layout. Other systems should also check their own language and keyboard settings. Don't infer keyboard layout solely from the system interface language.

Is it worth changing the layout?

Changing the layout will redistribute familiar actions and is not a shortcut to increase speed. If school, work and shared equipment use a fixed layout, make it stable first. Only when you clearly need another layout, create a separate practice record for it to avoid comparing the two sets of results together.

Today’s practice

Note down the current system input method and exercise layout, and check the actual output of y, z, a, q and commonly used punctuation points. Start timing after identifying the inconsistencies. If you change computers in the future, do this small check first to reduce the chance of mistaking configuration problems for finger deterioration.
