How to Improve Typing Speed: Find Your Main Bottleneck

diagnoses slow typing from four aspects: key finding, word reading, error correction and word selection, and develops targeted speed-increasing exercises.

Take apart "slow" and look at it

If a text is typed slowly, it may not necessarily mean that the finger moves slowly. You may have to read each new word twice, stop when you encounter a symbol, delete it repeatedly after making typos, or you may always choose the wrong Chinese candidate word. Finish a section first, do not restart it midway, and record the three most obvious pauses and their reasons.

If time is mainly spent on error correction, continuing to speed up the tapping will often only increase rework. Typing.com's accuracy article also emphasizes that speed needs to be paired with correct input. The goal of speeding up here is to complete content of the same difficulty more smoothly, rather than improving any display number.

only handles one bottleneck at a time

When finding keys is slow, select a small number of unfamiliar keys; when reading words is slow, replace them with easy-to-understand text; when symbols are slow, practice sentence endings and capitalization; when word selection is slow, break long strings of pinyin into semantic fragments that are easy to confirm. Practicing like this for ten minutes will make it easier to judge the effect than repeatedly refreshing the entire set of random questions in ten minutes.

You must return to the normal article after completing the special exercises. If the special scores improve and the general text remains unchanged, it means that the connection between skills still needs to be practiced. For example, being able to enter parentheses does not mean that you can naturally complete a parenthetical explanation.

Stable performance determines acceleration

First find a rhythm that can be completed more steadily, and then increase it slightly. If the number of errors increases significantly, return to the original rhythm to check for difficult points. There is no requirement to set a new record every time you practice; fewer errors at the same speed, or fewer pauses at the same accuracy, are both valuable improvements.

Today’s practice

Choose an unfamiliar passage as a baseline, practice the most obvious bottleneck, and then retest with another passage of similar difficulty. Keep the results twice and write a sentence "The reason why it became faster or slower today". Do not repeat the same article until it is memorized, and then regard this score as a general ability.
