One-Minute Typing Tests: Understanding WPM and CPM

Understand the difference between words per minute and standard word speed, and avoid direct comparison of results across languages and websites.

WPM is not equal to the number of English words

Common English test converts five characters into one standard word, WPM is the number of standard words per minute. Typing.com publishes the total number of input characters; other websites may deduct errors or only count correct characters. Therefore, if the same input section appears with different scores on different websites, it does not necessarily mean that the calculation is wrong.

CPM usually represents characters per minute. The number of pinyin keys, the number of final Chinese characters and the number of candidate confirmations in Chinese input are not the same thing. It is not appropriate to rank English WPM directly with Chinese writing speed.

How to understand the results of TigerTyping

This site counts correctly matched characters. Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese and Korean use CPM (characters per minute). Other practice languages use WPM: correct characters divided by 5, then divided by elapsed minutes. Timing mode is calculated based on the set duration; unlimited practice is calculated based on actual time consumption. The final accuracy will also take into account the errors that were deleted. Deleting all the typos will not erase the mistakes in the process.

For example, if you input 250 English characters correctly within one minute, it is converted into 50 WPM; if you input 120 Chinese characters correctly, it is 120 CPM. This is an example of understanding metrology, not a standard that newbies must meet.

makes test conditions comparable

Fixed language, mode, duration and device to keep error correction rules consistent. To know the normal level, do several complete tests and look at the middle level, not just the highest one. Copying and pasting, memorizing content, or restarting midway are not suitable for assessing real input ability.

Today’s practice

First take one minute to complete an unfamiliar text test, recording language, material type, speed, accuracy and the most obvious pause. Take the test again after taking a short break. If there is a big difference between the two times, first observe the reason and don't rush to label yourself "fast" or "slow".
