Multilingual Typing Practice: Layouts, Accents and Input Methods

Establish the corresponding relationship between languages, keyboard layouts and input methods to avoid confusion between cross-language results and characters.

The interface language and input language are different

Switching the website interface to French does not mean that the system keyboard can automatically input French accented characters; switching the exercise content to Japanese does not mean that the Japanese input method has been enabled. First confirm that the target text, system input method and keyboard layout match before starting the test.

The instructions for Apple describe adding input methods, switching languages, and viewing the virtual keyboard. The specific shortcut keys should be based on your own system settings and do not copy the configuration of another device.

Start with the difficult points of each language

For Latin alphabet languages, you can first observe accented characters, capitalization and punctuation; for languages that require combined input, focus on checking candidates and confirmation; for content written from right to left such as Arabic, you should pay extra attention to the text direction and the position of mixed numbers. Don’t adjust the order of the original text just because the cursor seems to be moving in a different direction.

First select short content that can be understood in each language. When the original text cannot be understood, input will simultaneously become a character recognition task, and it is not appropriate to directly compare it with the speed of familiarity with the language.

Record separately and then combine exercises

Practice each language separately first, confirm that basic input is available, and then practice short-segment switching. What is really easy to make mistakes in bilingual work is the boundary, such as Chinese followed by English abbreviation, and then back to Chinese punctuation. These boundaries can be included as separate exercises.

Today’s practice

Choose two languages that are actually used, enter a short paragraph in each, and write three sentences of mixed content. Record whether the first character after switching is correct and whether the punctuation meets the target. If the monolingual is normal but the mixing is frequently wrong, give priority to practicing switching boundaries next time instead of re-practicing all the key positions.
